So Studio welcomes Amsterdam-based photographer Bas de Graaf (1968), who brings his series Blinded by the Sun to the studio. The series emerged from his repeated travels to Japan over the past twenty years, where he became deeply captivated by the country’s beauty and culture.
Shot between 2015 and 2025, the work captures fragments of everyday life, from portraits and passing cars to clothing hanging quietly on a washing line. Through his camera, Bas de Graaf explores Japanese culture and its people, moving ever closer to his subjects and finding meaning in small, telling details. Colour plays a key role in this process.
The series is presented as photographic installations: multiple images placed behind glass that together form one visual whole. Think of a face split across multiple frames, leaning into each other – separate images that only fully reveal themselves when seen side by side.
Blinded by the Sun reflects on daily culture and fleeting moments. The kind you almost miss, until the light hits just right.
